A few words about Skiathos

Skiathos is the closest land to the Sporades islands, Skiathos-Skopelo-Alonissos. Skiathos has been inhabited since prehistoric times, probably by the Pelasgians and later possibly by the Cretans. [2] From ancient times it was always called Skiathos. Skiathos made a significant naval contribution to the Greek Revolution of 1821 and was part of the first Greek state. Also in 1807, the first Greek flag (which originally had a cross in the center with a blue background) was made in the Monastery of Evangelistria in the presence of great chieftains such as Nikotsaras, Yiannis Stathas and His Holiness Nifon. The flag was blessed in 1807 where Theodoros Kolokotronis was also present. In 1829 the Skiathites abandoned the Castle and returned to the old Byzantine city, the current city of Skiathos.

The leading Greek pedagogue, philosopher and teacher of the genocide of Theophilos Kairis was exiled to Skiathos, by decree of the then Government, and confined to the monastery of Evangelismos from November 1839 to March 1840.

The town of Skiathos, a modern holiday center with excellent tourist infrastructure, is also the island’s only settlement. Located on the south-eastern tip of the island in a sheltered bay that separates the island of Bourtzi, the settlement is relatively new having been built around 1829-1830 on the site of the corresponding ancient city. The trademark has always been its large natural harbor, which regulated the life of the city in its old and new years. Today, it is a haven for boats, giving the island a vibrant cosmopolitan character. Walking through the settlement, visitors are enchanted by the stone-paved streets, the whitewashed tile roofs, the picturesque harbor protected by four green islets and the beautiful Bourtzi.

The main attractions of the city are:

  • The house of the well-known writer Alexandros Papadiamantis (who is honored on the island every 2-3 January and 4 March) who was born and lived here.
  • Bourtzi, the small green island with the ruins of a Venetian fortress and the neoclassical old school buildings that house the Cultural Center of Skiathos. This small peninsula, which separates the harbor of Skiathos, was formerly a fortress founded by the Gizi brothers, who captured Skiathos in 1207. It was besieged with warships and warriors, but was destroyed in 1660 when it was captured. Franciscan Morosini. Today Bourtzi is a beautiful pine-covered recreation area with a wonderful view of the sea.

How to get to the island

  • By high-speed ferry or conventional ferry from the ports of Agios Konstantinos (Mainland Greece) and Volos
  • By conventional ship from the port of Thessaloniki during the summer season
  • By air from Athens and Thessaloniki.

Skiathos is connected by air to most European countries.
